Tikhvin theotokos assumption monastery: the house of the most pure mother of god
I invite you on a sightseeing tour of the Tikhvin Monastery. You will see his shrine – the Tikhvin Icon, which miraculously appeared to the people, who made a trip to many countries. And I will tell you how our churches are unique, how the appearance of the monastery has changed, what events it has experienced and what guests to meet.

History of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother
of God
We will start the tour from the observation deck on Fisheva Hill, where a magnificent panorama of the monastery opens. Let's go down to the locks and cross the Tikhvinka River – literally go the way of the Tikhvin Icon, especially revered. I will tell you about her extraordinary appearance on our earth, the miracles associated with her, and her long journeys in the 20th century. Here you will see the house-museum of Father Sergius Garclavs, who saved the icon and was its keeper.
Monastic Chronicles
Let's take a walk along the monastery walls – let's talk about siege sitting, about the standing of the Swedes. And then we will go to the territory of the monastery and visit:
- The Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, which is also called "Krylechko": there is a miraculous fresco of the 17th century from the Tikhvin icon.
- The warm Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a refectory is a "fortress within a fortress", an example of 16th-century architecture with preserved rubble masonry walls.
- The Dormition Cathedral of the 16th century, where the Tikhvin Icon resides. Here you will admire the fresco painting of the late 17th century and imagine how the temple was changed.
Also from the outside we will see the eclectic Holy Cross Church, built according to the project of N.L. Benois. We will ask for the innermost things at the Holy Stone at the base of the chapel of Elijah the Prophet. And we will also be impressed by the architecture of the belfry-beauty, three-span, five-tiered, five-tent - this is the visiting card of our monastery!
On the tour you will hear about the formation of the monastery, you will see in old photographs how it looked in the past. How this place carried out "sentinel service, how it became the "King's Praying Mantis", which of the reigning persons came here and what influence it had on the monastery - we will talk about all this on the tour.
