Mamayev kurgan: a story in stone

Every detail here speaks of the terrible 200 days of the Battle of Stalingrad, of the exploits of Russian soldiers. We will inspect the key compositions of the monument-ensemble, see the change of the honor guard company, decipher the reliefs of the walls-ruins and separately talk about the main sculpture of the complex. At an altitude of 102.0, it will become clear without words why there were such fierce battles for this point in the city.

What awaits you

We will pass the entire complex - from the entrance square to the main monument.

You will learn how the place looked like during the Battle of Stalingrad and how the idea of the complex was born, reveal the symbolism of its details.

The ruinous walls will show the most terrible day for Stalingrad and the turning point of the Battle of Stalingrad. Assault groups, the exploits of snipers, signalmen, recruits, ordinary people - all this you will read in the stone chronicle.

The sculptures on the Heroes' Square will also tell their stories: lined up, they seem ready to continue the fight.

After passing 200 symbolic steps, we will enter the Hall of Military Glory, where soldiers daily carry a guard and the Eternal Flame burns, illuminating 7200 names of dead heroes.

On the Square of Sorrow, you will see the sculpture "Mother's Sorrow". Let's stop at the grave of Vasily Chuikov: "Commander Storm", he has repeatedly found himself on the verge of life and death - I will tell you about his amazing fate and the combat road of his soldiers.

And, of course, the main monument of the complex deserves special attention - "Motherland Calls!". How it was erected, what were the original projects, who inspired the sculptor and how much the "main woman of Volgograd" weighs - let's talk about this and the entire triptych "The Sword of Victory".

Your guide: Татьяна
My name is Tatiana, and I have been living in Volgograd since birth. Traveling and communicating with people are my two main passions. Having received two technical educations, I still got into the tourism sector, and the puzzle was formed. Now I am a certified guide in Volgograd and the region. I don't like dry facts and figures, so our journey will be built on memorable stories. The main thing that I appreciate always and everywhere is freedom: in food, appearance, life and on excursions. So, I will gladly adjust the itinerary according to your ideas, interests and wishes. See you!
