From kandalaksha to kolvitsky waterfall

On the tour you will find panoramas of the Kandalaksha skerries, a walk along the shores of the White Sea and a wide waterfall on the Kolvitsa River. You will visit the village, which was once a millionaire collective farm, you will see a wooden chapel. The amazing nature of Kolvitsa will not leave you indifferent – and I will complement its beauty with stories about our region, the Pomor people and their crafts!

What awaits you

Stories about the Pomors
From the center of Kandalaksha we will go east. Our route lies along the southern coast of the Kola Peninsula, washed by the White Sea, so on the way we will talk about the water element and the people of the Pomors - northern peasant sailors. About the places they inhabited and their trades.

Panorama of Kandalaksha
From Krestovaya Mountain you will have a wonderful view of Kandalaksha and its surroundings (in winter we will see the city from the observation deck on the way to Kolvitsa). You will understand why this part of the White Sea is called the Kandalaksha Skerries, and the islands of the bay are under the protection of the reserve. You will learn about the interesting features of navigation, when the trading port appeared on these lands, what modern Kandalaksha lives by and much more.

Luvenga and its history
Halfway through, near the village of Luvenga, we will drive to the shore of the White Sea: to the sounds of the waves you will hear about the Civil War and the Intervention in the north of Russia – and about how recently life lived in a millionaire collective farm.

Kolvitsky sights
And in the village of Kolvitsa you will find a memorial stone, a wooden chapel - and, of course, the noisy and picturesque Kolvitsky waterfall. There will be stories about the place itself, as well as about salt-making and other crafts. If we have time, we will get acquainted with the example of small hydropower - a rural hydroelectric power station on the Kolvitsa River, which provides electricity to the villagers (there is only one skeleton left of it).
On the way back, it will be possible to collect water in the spring consecrated in memory of St. Theodoret of Kola.

My homeland is the Kola North. The region is not quite cozy at first glance, but, nevertheless, attracts travelers. Everyone, going to the North, is looking for something of their own: new impressions, knowledge, revelations ... And the North is responding. With its mountains and seas, tundra and forests, history and modernity, it helps a person find himself. You just need to listen — and tell the right story.
